Wheel Speed Sensor Operation

Wheel Speed Sensors are now used on all modern vehicles as a part of the ABS, Stability Control, vehicle speed, transmission systems. They can be passive type or active type sensors. They measure the speed of a tone wheel or ring attached to the wheel hubs or axles to inform the various ECUs on the vehicle of wheel speeds. Common causes of failure can be electrical failure as well as failure from physical damage. Due to the Wheel Speed Sensors location, they are often impacted directly to the sensor or to the wiring harness by debris. Raising of 4x4 vehicles can also cause wiring harnesses to be stretched causing breakage.
